Research Fee

To obtain a CD of thumbnails of the available images of a particular town or area, a research fee of $25 is required for up to 20 images. If the number of images available exceeds 20, we charge an additional $1.00 per image. Since Penobscot Marine Museum is a non-profit organization, the research fee helps to offset some of the time and expense of cleaning and scanning the glass plates. The research fee will be credited back to you on a print order of $50 or more. If a town is already scanned, the research fee is only $10.00 regardless of the number of images. Towns that have been scanned are highlighted in the index found in the 'States" section.

Digital Prints

Digital files are created from high-resolution scans of the original glass plate negatives using state of the art Epson scanners. Basic retouching is done to correct for large blemishes in the image, additional retouching can be purchased upon request for a fee. The images are given a slight sepia tone, typical of how they would have been presented in their original forms.

Digital prints are made using archival inks on Crane & Co.'s Mueso Fine Art Paper. Glossy prints are available upon request.

Silver Gelatin Prints

Traditional silver prints are made in the wet darkroom on fiber-based paper using the original glass plate negatives by our expert staff. These prints are made to archival standards. Please note that due to the age of the negatives, many bear imperfections such as scratches, chips, or small stains. These imperfections are part of the image, and add to their historic quality. Preview scans are available upon request so you may know exactly how your images will appear.

Commercial Use

Public display, commercial, publishing and advertising use fees are negotiated on an individual basis. Wholesale pricing is available if you wish to sell matted prints at your store or gift shop. Please contact us for more information or to receive a quote.
