Photo of the Month

April News:

A new cache of 1000 or so Eastern Illustrating negatives has been discovered and we hope to secure more in the near future. The new negatives include more views of Monhegan Island, Belfast, Searsport, Friendship and Hampden, Damariscotta, and Lubec. In the past month we have scanned Bayville, Corea and Coopers Mill as well as added additional scans to Boothbay, Belfast, Stockton Springs and Northport.

Each month we will feature a photograph from one of our collections. Prints of that photograph will be available for a 25% discount from our regular print prices.

This month's photo is of Thomaston Harbor taken from Brooklyn Heights. Resting in the harbor is the Reine Marie Stewart, the last of the great ships to be built in Thomaston. It was built in 1919 by Dunn & Elliot and sat in unsold in the harbor for many years. It ultimately was sold and became a Panamanian flag sailing vessel. On June 2, 1942 she was shelled and torpedoed by the Italian submarine Da Vinci, while in route from New York to East Africa with a cargo of lumber cut for fruit boxes. She was sailing alone and unarmed. On board was a crew of eleven men. All were saved.
